Tribe Ugyopini Fennah, 1979: 116

Fennah (1979), in a very brief note, initially separated the Asiracinae into the tribes Ugyopini and Asiracini.  The Ugyopini continued to be treated by Asche (1985, 1990) as a tribe of Asiracinae, which he considered paraphyletic with respect to the remaining Asiracinae. Asche’s Ugyopini are recognized by having a quadrate calcar bearing a row of hairs on each edge as opposed to the Asiracini that have a rounded calcar with scattered hairs.  Later, Emeljanov (1996) formally elevated the tribe to subfamily (Ugyopinae) with three tribes (Ugyopini, Eodelphacini, Neopunanini).  Urban et al. (2010) showed that Asiraca (of Asiracinae) and Ugyops (of Ugyopinae) were more closely related to each other than either was to the Neopunanini.  While their analyses did not include all the tribes of Asiracinae and Ugyopinae (sensu Emeljanov 1996), they proposed to subsume all the tribes within the Asiracinae until a more complete analysis could be performed (molecular data was needed from the Tetrasteirini, Platysystatini, and Eodelphacini).

Asche (1988) offered a preliminary examination of the evolution of the Ugyopini. Barringer and Bartlett (2011) comment on the recognition of the genera within the tribe.

The New World Ugyopini are large delphacids (larger than 6mm, generally closer to 8-9mm), rather cixiid-like, with a quadrate calcar, a rounded fastigium, and the vertex longer than wide. Ugyops is a large genus with about 101 species worldwide, with the greatest diversity on the islands of the Pacific.  Canyra is strictly New World.

Fennah (1979) characterized the tribe as follows:

“Genae without an oblique carina between antennal socket and frontoclypeal suture near its junction with lateral margin of frons. Rostrum attaining or surpassing post-trochanters. Macropterous form with subapical cell reaching to about apical third of tegmen; apex of clavus subtruncate or thickened, and usually followed by a transverse flexure line.”

Asche (1985, 1990) characterized the Ugyopini s.l. as having a quadrate calcar, and the “median of 5 spines at the distal end of the basitarsus located distinctly basal of distal row” (Asche 1990: 156).

Emeljanov characterized the Ugyopini (s.s.) as:

“Tribe characterized by having narrow head with extended eumetopa. median carina of which is partially or entirely divided, penis as of same type as in Eodelphacini, slanted set of 3-4 teeth on the second segment of the hindtarsi, sometimes with a tooth extended basally as on the first segment, absence of sinus on the posterior margin of the hindwings in the area of the vannus, loss of bend in membrane with retention of the nodal line of the veins” (p. 139).

*The aedeagus of the Eodelphacini is characterized as “…having the distal segment of the penis [the flagellum] arched clockwise (from the base curved to the left)” (p. 138).

New World species.

A number of the New World Ugyopini were described from females, making their specific identity hard to determine.
