Plant Exploration for Trees:
Why it is Critical in the 21st century

Former Morris Arboretum Director and photographer Paul Meyer

UDBG Friends Members: $10; Nonmembers: $15

Join Paul Meyer as he highlights plant exploration trips he’s made over the past 40 years to Korea, China, Armenia and Georgia. Meyer will underscore the importance of plant exploration and plant diversity amidst the dual challenges of climate change and the appearance of new pests and diseases. Along with his extensive travels and plant collecting trips that yielded one of the finest horticulture collections in the world, Meyer guided Morris Arboretum’s evolution from a hidden gem to one of the region’s outstanding garden destinations and world-class horticultural institutions known for its collections, aesthetics, education, and research.

After receiving his master’s degree from the University of Delaware’s Longwood Graduate Program, Paul Meyer joined the Morris Arboretum in 1976 as Curator and Director of Horticulture, becoming its Director in 1991. Meyer’s many accolades include the 2018 Arthur Hoyt Scott Medal for outstanding national contributions to the science and art of gardening, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Award from the American Horticultural Society in 2014, the Wyck-Strickland Award in 2010, the Award of Merit from the American Public Gardens Associate in 2013, and the American Horticultural Society’s Great American Gardens Professional Award in 2002.
