Lindera benzoin

Common Name: Native Spicebush

Pot Size: 2 g

Anyone who walks our local woodlands has seen this native understory shrub, particularly in spring and fall. Part of its ubiquitous nature in the woods is that deer dislike it, a great attribute for home gardeners. Another fine quality is that the beautiful spicebush swallowtail butterfly uses this plant as a larval (caterpillar) food source. Small chartreuse flowers appear in March before foliage. Bright red fruit on female plants in fall and clear yellow fall color round out its qualities.
