Selection with dark red tubular flower with yellow throats lure hummingbirds to the garden like no other plant, on par with Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower). Flowers appear profusely in early July, sporadically thereafter; reseeds if happy and not in thuggish way. This cultivar is vegetatively propagated to ensure uniformity. Spigelia’s native range falls just below the temperate mid Atlantic, but is still an wonderful addition to the garden with it’s fabulous color not often seen in our regional palette.
