Landscape Use
Phellodendron is very cold hardy, tolerates air pollution, drought, and has very few disease and pest problems. Best used in larger landscape settings like parks or gold courses. Good medium size tree with dark green foliage.
Foliage
Opposite, pinnately compound 5-13 leaflets, leaflets ovate-lanceolate, 2.5 to 4 inches long. Good dark-green summer color and a poor yellow in the fall.
Buds
Buds are small, ovid with 2 overlapping bud scales. Buds encircled by the leaf scar.
Bark
Deeply ridged and furrowed on older trunks, similar to cork in appearance.
