You’ve been admiring the birds in your backyard and now want to discover what is further afield. In this talk, you will learn more about birding opportunities in Delaware and beyond. How can you connect with local field trips or discover national and international tours? What are the best resources to learn more about birds and birding? What kind of clothing and equipment work well for birding, and what binoculars are the best value? This class will set you on your way and inspire you to explore birds throughout the region – and maybe even abroad!

Sally O’Byrne is a lifelong Delawarean and longtime Wilmington resident. Sally has pursued her interest in natural history as a teacher naturalist for the Delaware Nature Society for 35 years, currently focusing on adult environmental education. Sally was president of the Delmarva Ornithological Society (DOS) for two terms.  Her tenure hatched the Bird-A-Thon, and the two Delaware hawk watches.  Sally coordinated a year long bird survey at the Russell Peterson urban wildlife refuge 1999-2000, and helped create the Delaware Birding trail. She has participated in numerous surveys including the 5 year Delaware breeding bird atlas, and leads field trips for DOS. Sally is a board member of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and the Christina River Conservancy.  She is currently compiler of the Rehoboth Christmas Bird Count. Besides Delaware, Sally has enjoyed birds and nature internationally, visiting more than 10 other countries. Sally also has an interest in history, being co-author of Wilmington Waterways. She lives in an historic house in downtown Wilmington and is the Wilmington Friends (Quaker) Meeting historian.
