Alternate, rounded leaf with a long petiole. Bluish-green in summer arranged in a whorl around the stem.
Small with a subtle halo around the base of the bud on the stem.
Newer stems are purple, older stems are light gray.
Showy 6 to 8 inch panicle resembles smoke, hence the common name.
Small .25 wide, kidney-shaped, dry, reticulate drupe.
Seeds and cuttings.
'Black Velvet' - Dark purple foliage and abudant floral "smoke."
'Blazeaway' - Relatively compact form with deep reddish purple foliage.
'Cooke's Purple' - Attractive purple smoky inflorescences.
