Creamery Lawn and Garden

The Creamery Lawn and Garden rests between the South Campus Green and the existing parking lot in front of the Fred Rust Ice Arena. The garden will leverage and expand upon the already popular and successful UDairy Creamery and raise the public profile of UDBG with the Newark Community.

This garden will serve as the ‘Campus’ entry into UDBG. A stone entry plaza surrounded by a seat wall will create a space for pause, orientation, and threshold. Continuing on toward the South Campus Green is a proposed entry pavilion with way-finding and interpretative materials that will also house restrooms, the relocated Insectary, and the expanded UDBG Offices. Additionally, this structure helps define the lawn in front of the Creamery.

The Creamery Lawn and Garden creates a friendly and safe place for play and garden exploration. A lawn between the Creamery and proposed entry pavilion will have interactive, sculptural elements for children to run around and climb. Covered decks offer an area for parents to watch their children play or for students to sit with an ice cream cone between classes. Planting areas to the east and west of the lawn helps form the space and creates a barrier between the parking lot, lawn, and greenhouses while providing opportunities for families to experience the Botanical Gardens on a smaller scale. Strategic shade trees provide shelter without blocking the production greenhouses.
