Blurring the Lines: Creating Inspiring Spaces in the Ornamental and Vegetable Garden

Sometimes we dissociate vegetable gardens from ornamental gardens. Some methods are similar, some can be different, but how do you choose? David Mattern is a gardener at Chanticleer responsible for seasonal bed and container displays using tropical, annual, and perennial combinations throughout the Teacup courtyards. He also cares for the vegetable garden with the goal of being educational, aesthetic, and above all productive. In this lecture David provides an example of how he likes to “blur the lines” between these two worlds. Sharing his approach in technique, style, and plant design in these two dynamic spaces.
David Mattern is a Horticulturist at Chanticleer caring for the Teacup courtyards and Vegetable garden. David holds a degree in Landscape Contracting with an emphasis on design, and a minor in Horticulture from Penn State University. He is also a graduate of Longwood Gardens’ Professional Horticulture Program. David has experience working at public gardens in the U.S. as well as internationally, including England and South Africa. In addition to gardening at Chanticleer, David writes, lectures, and teaches on various gardening subjects.
